Arnold died last evening at 8:40. The end was not entirely unexpected, but it came peculiarly sudden. He was sitting his easy chair, visiting with several callers, keenly conscious and in his usual spirits; in an instant the veil was drawn—he was dead. He was aged thirty years. Interment will be on Monday afternoon, in the city cemetery. Deceased was a young man of sterling qualities of head and heart, and numbered very many friends in this county, where he was born and where he spent practically all his life. much of the time during the five years last past he was in poor health, and at times an intense but enduring sufferer from rheumatic pains, and nearly two years ago he went to Texas to try a change of climate. The change was decidedly beneficial up to the time of his visit home last summer. Very soon after his return south he fell a victim to an attack of la grippe; this involved his lungs with the other complications, and was doubtless the ultimate cause of his death. The long ride home from the south some two weeks ago was exhausting, but he was of better cheer after arrival, and it was thought he might survive for a time yet, but this was not to be. Walter was a member of the Knights of Pythias of this city. Subsequent Publication: Monday, March 15, 1897 All that was left on earth of Walter Rich Arnold was laid in the grave this afternoon, in the family lot in the City cemetery. Funeral services were held at the family residence, on East Washington street, at two o’clock and the spacious home was filled with mourning friends, of whom deceased and the bereaved parents have many, especially among the pioneer families of the county. Rev. Edward J. Jeffers, of the First Baptist church, officiated at the services at the home, and at the grave the ceremonies were in charge of the Knights of Pythias, of which order deceased was a truly beloved member. The bearers were selected from among his former associates in the above order. They were: F. M. Douglass, R. Lee Page, Henry F. Voelker, Edw. H. Thompson, Bert Lampkin, Robt. Beard. Deceased, in his life time, was a person whose every influence was for good, and in his death the community loses an upright young man—surely a consistent Christian.
