L. Hurd. The facts of the accident which resulted in the death of Miss Arnold were related to the Sentinel Sunday morning by Miss Mary Arnold, sister of Miss Arnold, who was with her at the time of her death. Miss Arnold left Ionia last Thursday and went from here to Belding where she remained over night with Mrs. W. A. Wilder. From Belding she went Friday by the Pere Marquette road to Chicago. The train arrived at the Fifth avenue station Friday afternoon at 4:50 and Miss Arnold was met by her sister at the train. They took the Southport avenue car, transferring to the Ogen-Wells line, being then on their way to Miss Mary Arnold’s house were Miss Arnold was to remain for a short time before they left for Kentucky. The car on which they took passage ran only so far as the corner of Sherman and North Clark street, where there is a switch. At that point the car switches into the station and then runs back. The home of Miss Mary Arnold is directly opposite this station, and Miss Arnold who had visited there before was familiar with the locality. When the car stopped she remarked: “This begins to look like home.” Miss Arnold then got off the rear of the car followed by her sister, Miss Mary Arnold. Passing around the rear of the car she started to cross the other track, on which was coming a southbound interurban car, which she did not see until she had stepped on the track and it was too late to go back. It was then dark, and blinded by the head light of the approaching car, Miss Arnold hesitated with the apparent intention of stepping back, but it was too late, and the front of the car struck her across the forehead fracturing the skull, knocking her down, the car passing partly over her. The wheels did not touch her as she fell between the rails, her injuries consisting of a fractured skull and leg broken in two places. She was taken from under the car and carried to a plumbing establishment near by, where an ambulance was summoned taking her to the Chicago Union hospital. At the hospital she was treated by Dr. Lindsley Beaton of the hospital staff and Dr. E. N. Elliott, a north side surgeon. Every possible care was given her but there was no chance to save her life, and it was the opinion of the hospital doctors that Miss Arnold had been unconscious from the moment she was struck by the car. She lived until 7:30 but in an unconscious condition all of the time. Miss Mary Arnold was alone with her sister at the time of the accident, there being no one with them whom she knew. When the accident happened, two ladies who were on the car with her but whom she did not know gave her every assistance and went to the hospital with her. She appreciates very keenly the assistance given her by those present, by the policeman on duty where the accident occurred and by the attendants at the hospital. When the hospital was reached a telephone message was sent to Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Hurd, who went at once to the hospital and remained there until the end came. Miss Arnold and Mrs. Hurd left Chicago Saturday afternoon at four o’clock with the remains, coming here by the way of Grand Rapids. The funeral will take place from the residence of Ed. I. Arnold, who resides in the John Bible house on East Washington street, Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock. Interment will be in Oak Hill and the services will be conducted by Rev. E. E. Branch, pastor of the Baptist church. Another Publication: The Grand Rapids Herald, November 26, 1911 Ionia, Mich., Nov. 25.—Miss Emma R. Arnold, aged 55 years, was killed by a street car in Chicago.
