Arnold, 81, died at his home in South Ionia Monday morning, March 23, at 12:50 o’clock. He had been ill for the past 10 weeks with pneumonia. He was the son of George Wesley and Esther Arnold, and the grandson of Oliver Arnold, who came here with the Dexter colony in 1833 and settled in South Ionia. Susan Foot, second wife of Oliver Arnold, and grandmother of Fred Arnold, was the first white woman to die in Ionia County. She died February 11, 1834. Mr. Arnold was born August 26, 1855 in South Ionia, and has always lived there on a part of the land his grandfather bought of the government in 1833. He left school at the age of 16 and went to work with his father in his shop April 1, 1872, and worked there steadily for 58 years. He was the last of his generation of the Arnold family. December 18, 1881, he married Hannah Snobble and she died February 12, 1918. Two daughters were born to them, Adeline who died March 16, 1921, aged 33 years, and Lenna who survives him. June 21, 1921 he married Anna Majinsky, who survives him. Funeral services will be held from the home in South Ionia Wednesday afternoon, March 25, at 2 o’clock. Rev. Paul Stewart will officiate and interment will be in the Arnold lot in Balcom cemetery.
