Arnold sank into his final slumber at 8:00 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, after an illness of less than a week from valvular heart trouble, superinduced by a grippe cold combined with the shock incident to the tragic death of his sister. He had long suffered from a weak heart, the same functional ailment which claimed his brother Walter some year ago. Deceased was the second eldest of a family of four children, two sons and two daughters, of the pioneer family of Mr. and Mrs. Walter D. Arnold. He was approaching his 51st year, was born in Ionia, and had resided here much the greater part of his life. The few years which were not spent in Ionia were spent on the farm in Keene township and after that in the agricultural implement business in Saranac, whence he returned to Ionia some six years ago, and in company with his cousin Fred Arnold, purchased Ionia’s original laundry business—the Ionia City laundry, which has since been successfully conducted by them, the partnership existing at the time of the death of Edwin. The announcement of the death, which came so suddenly to the ears of the many friends of the family, and at a time when even his illness was unknown save to but an intimate few, was a distinct shock following as it did, the tragic death of his sister Emma in Chicago, on Friday, Nov. 24 last, and the death of his venerable mother in May of this year, the third death, therefore, within the brief space of eight months. Mr. Arnold was twice married, the first helpmeet being Mrs. Mattie Dexter- Stebbins, and the surviving widow being Miss Nellie Densmore. Three children, all daughters, also survive; Miss Mattie, by first marriage, and Louella and Julia Meta. Deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity, holding membership in the blue lodge and the chapter, and the burial will be under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, at 2 o’clock p.m. on Tuesday, with interment in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery. He held membership also in the Modern Woodmen fraternity. Faithful to the family characteristic, he was also a consistent attendant upon church worship, holding membership here with the Disciples. The funeral of Edwin I. Arnold was attended at the late home on East Washington street Tuesday p.m. under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity. Rev. G. W. Moore preached the discourse, and he was assisted in the religious portion of the service by Rev. E. E. Branch. The singing was by Mrs. W. L. Peek and Dr. L. W. Yates. The carriers were chosen from among the brother masons, as follows: H. A. Rich, Henry F. Voelker, Dr. F. Lindley Hoag, Edward S. Nowland, and L. L. Winslow, former partner of deceased at Saranac. The fraternity accompanied the remains to the graveside where the ritual service was carried out. Subsequent Publication: Friday, December 29, 1911 Resolutions—Edwin I.
