The remains of the bodies have been excavated and removed to the Balcom cemetery, under the direction of B.J. Boynton, local undertaker. It has been a sad ordeal for a number of residents of South Ionia who thought a great deal of the historic spot and who urged in every manner to have the highway take some other course. A crew of highwaymen who are working on the cut-out over the hills had charge of the excavating. The body of Oliver Arnold, which had been in its grave for more than 68 years was one of the first to be disinterred and the body of Susan Arnold, his wife, said to be the first white woman to have been buried in Grand river valley was removed Saturday morning. She was only 30 years of age when she died in 1834, a period of 93 years ago. It was thought by Fred Arnold that there were only ten graves in the cemetery, but twelve was the number found up to Monday night. There may be more, according to excavators, as there is no official record of the burials.
