P. Leindecker and Arns’ elder brother married sisters, and Arns made his home here with Mr. Leindecker, coming here every Saturday night to stay over Sunday. The Grand Rapids Democrat gives the following particulars of the fatal accident to Matthew Arns: Wednesday afternoon at 2:20, a mixed freight train, on the Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee railway, struck Mat Arns, a section hand, aged about 21 years, killing him almost instantly. Arns worked in the switch gang, and was filling in the track about two blocks east of Grand avenue, when the freight, which was going down grade at about fifteen miles an hour, came along. The men had stepped away from the track, but Arns saw a shovel lying on the track at a distance of about eight feet in front of the engine. He rushed up to take it away, but was not swift enough and the engine struck him before he could be stopped. His head was frightfully mangled, with a deep cut in the right side of the forehead, and his right foot was crushed. He appeared to live about ten minutes after he was struck. He companion s were a short distance off when the accident happened. They said that it was done so quickly that they did not realize what had occurred for a minute. When the train ached the station the engineer, Bob Kerr, reported that his engine had struck a man, but he did not know the extent of his injuries. An engine and a way car was sent out to bring the victim in. Arns boarded in the Baldwin House, and on Saturdays he would go to his home, which is in Ionia. Arns was a Prussian by birth, and came to this city last spring, and since then he has been employed by the Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee railroad. Coroner Bradish was notified and upon his arrival order the remains removed to Dolbee’s undertaking rooms, where an inquest was held Thursday morning.
