Ash, aged 79, of Greenville, died Sunday, February 29, 2004 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus, Grand Rapids. He was born in Champion, Alberta, Canada, the son of Anthony and Anna Straus Ash, on March 24, 1924. After moving back to Remus, Michigan in 1931 and then Belding, Michigan in 1938, Stan graduated from Belding High School in 1941. Stan took related instruction in the Murray Body Trade School and was employed by Gibson Refrigerator Co. and several Detroit engineering companies. He joined the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in Germany until his discharge. In June of 1946, he helped in organizing and starting the Greenville Tool and Die Company, and became President and sole owner in 1965. He married Blanche Petersen on May 26, 1951 at her family's home near Sidney. Stan and Blanche were long time members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Greenville. He has been a leader in the Greenville, Belding, and Montcalm County areas. His involvement includes the Greenville School System, where he set up a community apprentice course in tool and die. He also became an active leader in establishing Montcalm Community College, where he served as the first Board Chairman in 1965. He was a former Director of the First State Bank of Greenville, served on the United Memorial Hospital Board and was Chairman, past Secretary and member of the Greenville Rotary for 25 years, Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce, and State and US Chambers, twice a member of the Board of Directors, member of the Montcalm County unit of the American Red Cross, especially active in the blood drive, the United Fund as past Chairman, active and served the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, life member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, National Safety Council. He also sponsored many area Little League Baseball, community softball and bowling teams, and served as President of the Montcalm Community College Foundation. Along with his wife, he founded the Stanley and Blanche Ash Foundation, which stresses education along with community projects. He has been honored with numerous awards locally, statewide, and nationally. His generosity was quiet and determined, and has been recognized by both private citizens and the public community. He is survived by his wife, Blanche; daughter, Jennifer, both of Greenville; his sisters, Alice Thompson of Belding, Thelma Church of Bath, MI, Lucille (Robert) McGuire of Santa Maria, CA; brother, Frank (Nora) Ash of Greenville; and 13 nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Richard and Stein; sister, Bernice; sister-in-law, Maxine Pumfrey; and niece, Marilyn Slama. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Scott Linder officiating. A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hurst Funeral Home in Greenville. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Stanley and Blanche Ash Foundation or St. Luke's Rush Presbyterian Medical Center for Parkinson's Research.
