Ionia Sentinel - 16 January 1885
A son of Chas. Ashby, 12 years old, was accidentally drowned in Long Lake on New 
Years day.  The lad and several children were skating on the lake and he started 
home after his sister.  His sister came in about an hour but she had not seen him. 

Still an uneasiness was felt, but when they all returned home several hours later 
and he had not been seen they became certain something was wrong.  HHs skate 
tracks on the ice were traced up and led to an air hole.  his body was found under 
the ice, after being in the water about four hours.  He had evidently skated into 
the water and coming up under the ice was drowned.  The funeral was held at the 
United Brethren church on Sunday.
