Dan was born May 12, 1936, in Junction City, Kan., the son of Sherman B. and Zelma (Martin) Ashley. He retired after serving 22 years in the U.S. Army and later worked for Belding Area Schools for 15 years. Dan was a past member of the American Legion and VFW in Belding. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and always enjoyed a good joke. He was married on July 17, 1965, at Fort Benning, Ga., to Danielle Cumberworth. Dan is loved and survived by his wife, Danielle, and their children, Corlee (Mark) Winkler of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Shannon (Keith) Dewey and Darci (Tim) Lowe, all of Belding; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and one brother, John Ashley of Kansas. Dan was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Sherman Jr., Dean, Louis, James; and one sister, Irene. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastors Kelly Munger and Archie Messenger officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Foundation.
