Another of the early pioneers and a grand good woman has laid down the burdens of life and has gone to her rest and reward. Eliza Ashley died Thursday, April 20th, aged 68 years. With her husband John Ashley they have resided on the old homestead over forty years and it has always been an attractive and pleasant spot. Mrs. Ashley was born in Rensaler Co., N.Y., where she was united in marriage to Mr. Ashley, and soon thereafter came to Michigan. It was at their home that the Washington Club was organized and Mrs. Ashley has always been considered the mother of the club. She was stricken with a cold about seven weeks ago developing into grippe which took such a firm hold on her system as to baffle the best of nursing and medical skill. The funeral was very largely attended at the home by the friends of the deceased who held her in high esteem. Many members of the Washington Club which she loved so dearly were present to pay their last respects. Rev. L.B. Alberts preached an effective sermon and L.W. Sprague gave a fine eulogy in behalf of the club. Her remains were interred in the cemetery near by where so many of the hardy pioneers of that community now rest.
