Atwell Killed Another Portland Soldier Died in Closing Days of War. Was a Son of the Late Nelson Atwell, of Danby. Lost His Life Three Days After Private Schmidt Was Killed. Private Claud L. Atwell was killed in action in France Oct. 15th, three days after Private John P. Schmidt met his death. He left Camp Custer with the 85th division at the same time Private Schmidt departed and was evidently n the same unit in France. He was a son of the late Nelson Atwell, of Danby, and a brother of Mrs. Hattie Ames, of this village. His mother lives in Danby, and there are several brothers and sisters. Besides the one mentioned are Harry, Lansing; Horace, Grand Ledge, William, Eagle; Teddy, Danby; Mrs. Hattie Burhans, Coral; Mrs. Claud Barber, Danby. He carried an insurance of $10,000, which is now payable to his mother. His thoughtfulness and desire to protect her will enable her to pass her remaining years in comfort, though the shock of her son’s death will ever be present. Claud was born in Danby Jan. 13, 1893, and resided there until he was called to camp early in June. He had little more than three weeks’ training at Custer when the division was ordered overseas. His mother had heard from him frequently and all was well when the last letter was written. His father was a veteran of the Civil war. The news reached her Thursday morning, in the stereotyped style of the war department. The telegram said Private Atwell had been killed in action Oct. 15th. He was the fourth soldier from this vicinity to be killed in action. Three others have died of disease. At the Methodist church next Sunday afternoon Rev. R.S. MacGregor, the pastor, will give a memorial address in honor of Private Atwell, whose mother is a devoted member of that church. The service will begin at 3:00.
