Augst, age 75, of Decatur, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home with his family on Friday, September 20, 2013 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Ernie was born June 3, 1938, in Lake Odessa, Michigan, the son of the late Gerald (Scotty) Augst and Rose (Cook) Augst Draghl. After graduation from Woodland High School in 1956, he enlisted in the United States Army and served two years in Germany, where he played football on the service team. After his tour of duty he served with the Army Reserves until 1962. He was employed at General Motors Fisher Body Plant in Lansing, Smith Brother's Elevator in Lake Odessa, the Decatur Elevator and retired from Gene's Electric in Decatur. After retirement Ernie and Sandie spent winters in Kingsland, Texas. Ernie's favorite times were spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grand child. He also enjoyed fishing in Canada and at the cabin on Bluff Lake, deer hunting, and Morel mushroom hunting in the Upper Peninsula with friend, Roy Hickmott. He enjoyed watching all sports, but college football was his favorite and he looked forward to the season every year. On February 28, 1959 he and Sandra Sargeant were married at the Grace Brethren Church in Lake Odessa, and she survives with three sons, Scott (Ann) of Portland, Oregon; Darryl (Nancy) of Decatur; Eric (Sheila) of Kalamazoo; grandchildren Jordan, Aubree, Nicholas, Tyler, Riley, Brennan, Derick, Ericka, Sherica, Calla Augst and Josh Whitlock, and one great-grandson Alex Giardi. Also surviving are two sisters, Gerildine Winsley of Arizona, and Bonnie (Michael) Rockafellow of Lansing, Michigan; one brother Vaughn (Carolyn) of Flora, Indiana, and sister-in-law Wanda Gabriel of Kingsland, Texas; two stepbrothers, Michael (Mary Lou) Draghi and James Draghi of Glastonbury, Connecticut. Also twenty-two nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Nathan Draghi, brother Owen, and brother-in-law George Winsley. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Newell Funearl Home, Decatur, with James Abshagen officiating. Burial was in Lakeside cemetery Decatur with military rites conducted by VFW Celery City Post # 6248 and American Legion Post # 309 both of Decatur. Memorials may be made to Hospice of S.W.
