He Enjoyed Long Life and Good Health; Held Several Offices of Trust and Confidence. Leaves Widow and Married Children. Scott W. Augst, who has lived in this village or the township of Odessa since most people can remember, coming here with his parents from Ohio at the age of 15 years, quietly passed away at his home at the noon hour Wednesday at the age of 89 years. For the past few weeks Mr. Augst seemed just a little slower than usual but was still able to get down town. It is said that he picked a few cherries and ate them, had his dinner, then expressing himself as not feeling well, lay down and quietly passed away. Mr. Augst and his first wife raised a family of six girls and two sons on a farm in this township, then moved to Lake Odessa where all were members of the local Methodist church, and all the children finished their educations in our school. His wife died in 1924 and in 1928 he married Mrs. Blanche Burns, a nurse. He has lived quietly, enjoying good health. Last winter he and his wife spent several weeks in Georgia. On account of the wife visiting other places he came home by train alone. Always keeping a clear mind he has had a fine old age, never swerving from appropriate action. For several years Mr. Augst was a director of the Farmers & Merchants bank and also served as its president for a year or more. He was chairman of the building committee that erected the Methodist church in 1904 and has served officially since, recently emeritus. For many years he was a director of the Woodland Fire Insurance company and also was a director in the Tri-County Fair association. He held positions of trust and confidence always assuming a quiet but respectful attention. Mr. Augst has been one of the grand old men of this town, and has had a quiet, peaceful decline from the heavy work of the farmers in earlier years. Those left to mourn are Mrs. Leon Carter, Lake Odessa; Mrs. Minnie Cauffield, San Diego, Cal.; Mrs. Mary Shaw, Lake Odessa; Leon Augst, Valdosta, Ga.; Mrs. Eva Bishop, Lueders, Texas; Mrs. Robert Ainsworth, Lake Odessa; Mrs. Andrew Geiser, Ionia; one son Ernest passed away about fifteen years ago. There are 28 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the Methodist church at 2 p.m. Saturday. The body will lie in state at the Wortley home from today until time of funeral. Burial will be at Lakeside.
