The remains of Mrs. Cornelia Avery arrived on the mid-day train, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Richard T. Parker of Detroit, and were met by the funeral party at the station and taken directly to Highland Park cemetery for interment. The service there was read by Rev. E.E. Branch, and the music was by Mrs. G.M. Phelps and Miss Lucy Cull. The bearers were Thane Benedict, Lee Yates, J.C. Beattie, Herbert E. Powell, Edward W. Krainbrink and Edward Decker. Mrs. Cornelia S. Avery was the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Yates Harter. Mr. Harter was for many years a pioneer merchant of Ionia, having emigrated from Herkimer county, New York, at a very early date. Mrs. Avery had two sisters, Mrs. Abbie Harter Strong of Kalamazoo, and Mrs. Frances Harter Rogers of Grand Rapids, both deceased. The early home of the Harter family was on Main street, where the west end Lauster’s drug store now stands. The Harter block next east was built by Benjamin Harter, father of Mrs. Avery. She, with her two daughters, Miss Catharine Avery of Los Angeles, California, and Miss Florence Avery, now Mrs. Richard Parker of Detroit, lived for many years in the homestead on High St. The death of Mrs. Avery removes the last direct descendant of a family long and honorably known in the history of Ionia.
