Catherine “Cathy” Lynn (Brown) Avery, 54, of Saranac, passed away after a 
courageous battle with cancer on January 30, 2013 in Byron Center.  She was 
born January 1, 1959 in Belding the daughter of Dwight and Phyllis (Reynolds) 
Brown. 

Cathy was a member & past president of the Saranac American Legion Ladies 
Auxiliary.  She married Tom Avery, September 16, 1989.  He proceeded her in 
death in 1999.  She graduated from Saranac High School class of 1978.  She was 
very connected to her community and always willing to volunteer. 

Cathy is survived by her mother, Phyllis Brown of Saranac; brothers, Roger 
(Terese) Brown of Florida, Ed (Deb) Brown of Ionia, John (Frances) Brown of 
Saranac; sisters, Shirley (Gary) Christiansen of McBride; step-children, Tom 
(Shelley) Avery of Alton, Tracie (Sean) Sadler of Wetmore; seven step-
grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and friends.  She was preceded in death 
by her husband, Tom Avery; father, Dwight Brown, who passed away in 2002. 

Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Saranac 
Community Church with Pastor Becky Poor officiating.  Visitation will be held 
Friday, Feb. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac. Memorial 
contributions may be made to Ionia Area Hospice.
