Avery, 89, who died at two o’clock Saturday morning, April 3, were held from Stone Funeral Home, Monday afternoon, April 5. Rev. C. A. Braddy of the Church of Christ officiated and burial was in Highland Park cemetery. Mr. Avery was born at Adrian, May 23, 1853, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Avery. He came to Ionia from Grand Rapids in 1886 and was employed in the D.L.&N. railroad shops. He became an engineer for the D.L.&N. and later was employed by the Pere Marquette when that company took over the old road. He served this road for over 40 years and retired from active service in 1924. Mr. Avery was married twice. His first wife, Mary Clifford of Allegan, died in 1896. His second marriage was to Gertrude Eager, who died in 1937. He is survived by a daughter, Mae Avery of Ionia, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Jennie Avery, who made her home with Mr. Avery and his daughter. Pall bearers were Alex Marchbank, Erwin Redemsky, George Comstock and Robert Bliss. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Jeanette Haynes, Mrs. T. C. Bloomer and Mrs. Frank Judevine.
