The remains of Cyrus Ayers, who died at the Traverse City hospital Saturday morning, reached Portland on [missing words] and were taken to the home of Mrs. Joel Wilson, an only daughter of deceased, where funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 by Rev. W.W. Slee, of the local Methodist church. The body was laid to rest in the Portland township cemetery. Mr. Ayers had been in ill health for a number of years, and was taken to the Traverse City institution last March, after showing signs of mental depression. He was born in Yates county, N.Y., in 1835, and came to Michigan with his parents in August of the following years, the family settling in Washtenaw county. In 1854 they moved to Orange township, this county, where deceased has since resided. In 1864, Mr. Ayers was married to Miss Cornelia Jordan, a sister of James Jordan, of Orange, who survives him. A son, William E. Ayers, of Rochester, N.Y., also survives. Mr. Ayers was a pioneer of Orange township and was well known, having resided on the same farm which he purchased in 1861 until moving to the village several months ago on account of poor health. His death had been expected at almost any moment, his condition having been pronounced hopeless when he entered the Traverse City hospital. Those from out of town who attended the funeral services Tuesday afternoon were William E. Ayers, of Rochester, N.Y.; Lucinda _____, of Toledo, O.; Mrs. F.W. Allen, Detroit; William Barber, George Barber and David Raymond, Grass Lake; Mrs. William Ayers, Lansing.
