Ayers, son of Nathan B. and Nancy Ayers, was born in Washtenaw county, Michigan, January 22, 1839, and departed from earth to the celestial home above August 28, 1922, being at the time of his death 83 years and seven months of age. When he was 15 years old his parents moved to Portland township, Ionia county, this state, and settled on Section 6, in which locality he has since resided. In 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Minkler and one year thereafter they moved into their new home which they had meantime prepared and in which they have continued to reside. Mr. and Mrs. Ayers were the parents of three children, the first two dying in fancy. The third, a daughter, Maggie, died August 21, 1895, being at the time of her death 13 years of age. Mr. Ayers received a common school education and after leaving the district school he continued to study and improve himself until he became a teacher in said schools. At 30 years of age he received an injury to his right hand in a threshing machine, which necessitated amputation, and to which he submitted without taking anesthetics. This was a great shock to him and undoubtedly was the cause of his poor health ever afterward, but it never deprived him of a strong will power which enabled home to forbear great plain and suffering. His most outstanding characteristics were charity, honesty, and frugality. Many years ago he professed Christianity, though he never united with any church organization, he entertained the hopes of a glorious immortality and believed that he would someday or time again meet his friends and loved ones who have gone before. Funeral services were held in the home on Wednesday, August 30, 1922, Mrs. A. E. Bradt and Mrs. Eugene Vance singing appropriate hymns, and Rev. Charles Nease as officiating clergyman and his body was laid to rest beside the other members of his family in the Keefer cemetery.
