Babcock, in the 66th years of his age. Mr. Babcock was a son of the late William S. Babcock, and was born Jan. 16th, 1820, in Hopewell, Ontario Co., N.Y. In March, 1836, he came to Ionia having been sent by his father and Philo Bates, Esq., with some mechanics to erect dwellings for their families on the south side of Grand river. Here he was subsequently joined by his father and family. He was married Dec. 18, 1845, to Harriet M. Clark, and resided in the vicinity of the Babcock homestead until his removal to South Boston, Mich., about four years since. Mr. B. made a profession of his faith in Christ in the spring of 1849, uniting at that time with the First Presbyterian church of Ionia, of which he continued a consistent member until the day of his death. During the past winter he had been in feeble health, and for a few weeks previous to his death he experienced more or less of suffering. He died suddenly of disease of the heart. Mr. Babcock was a man of a naturally retiring disposition and needed to be intimately known to be truly appreciated. He was marked by strict integrity and uprightness of character in all his dealings, as well as by a high sense of honor and unwavering principle. He has not left a stain upon the record of his life to call a blush to the cheek of one member of his family. His widow, his son and daughter, three brothers and three sisters, survive to mourn his loss. ---------------- Portland Observer, 17 Jun 1885 Joseph Babcock, an old settler, of South Boston, died last week, aged 75 years.
