Babcock. The death of Mr. Herman Babcock occurred yesterday morning after a brief sickness at his son’s home in the New Petoskey. He was an old man in years, but time seemed to have touched him but lightly, and to his friends death came with a shock. He was born in Hopewell, N.Y., June 29, 1818, and as a young man came to Michigan, settling at Ionia. Here he made his home until 1879, when he moved to Petoskey. A year later he went to the vicinity of Horton’s Bay and again entered upon pioneer life. Two years ago he returned to Petoskey with his son, Mr. Richard Babcock. He was a man of earnest purpose and consistent life, and a man whose religious profession was accompanied by an active Christian service. Of his immediate family, two sons are living, Mr. J. H. Babcock and Mr. Richard Babcock, both of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Clark of Lansing and Mrs. Harter of Ionia, who with their families mourn for him. The funeral service was held today, Rev. H. H. Shawhan officiating, and the remains taken to Horton’s Bay for interment beside those of his who preceded him seven years ago. - Petoskey Independent Democrat, Oct. 25.
