Her maiden name was Matilda May, and she was born in Exeter, Otsego county, N.Y., September 1, 1813. Her parents moved to Connecticut soon after her birth and then to Providence, R.I., later returning to Otsego county, N.Y., where they remained until the death of her father. The mother with the children finally located in Hopewell, Ontario county, N.Y. Lucius Babcock came to Ionia county in 1836, purchasing a piece of land and making a clearing in the then promising township of Orange. In the fall of 1839 he made a visit to New York, and on his return in 1840, he brought with him, as a wife, the deceased. The trip from Detroit to Ionia was made in an open wagon with an ox team. Mrs. Babcock was the mother of five children, three sons and two daughters. The eldest daughter, Lucy, was the first wife of Henry Canfield, and died about fifteen years ago. The youngest son, Pitt May, died at the age of 12, many years ago. Three children—Burton, Herbert and Anna (Mrs. A. B. Morse) survive her. As a neighbor, among the pioneers, Mrs. Babcock was greatly beloved; as a wife and mother she fulfilled her duties with an affectionate regard for the family that will cause her memory to be ever cherished. For twenty-five years she has been an invalid, and has been little outside her home. She united with the Congregational (now Presbyterian) church in this city in 1843. In the spring of 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Babcock moved into the city and have since made their home here. The funeral will be at the residence of Judge A. B. Morse, on Thursday morning at 10:30. Interment in Highland Park. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/b/babcock6255nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.3 Kb
