He had been in poor health several months. Mr. Babcock was born in Berlin township, the son of pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. Lucius Babcock. He received his early education in the Loomis school. At the age of 21 he went to Canandaigua, N.Y., entering an academy there to study the higher courses. He finished his education at Bryant and Stratton college, Rochester, N.Y. Not long after he finished school he went to St. Marys, Mo., and entered the real estate field with his uncle, Lester Babcock. Later he was lured back to Ionia county and entered the banking business with W. C. Page. For a time he was associated with the bank at Muir. While still a young man he became identified with the lumber interests of the state, which was still in infancy. He established himself in a business at McBride and established the lumber firm in Ionia which was later the Seymour B. Gorham Lumber company. While in McBride and later in Ionia he employed Levi Marshall, now a member of the Marshall-Wright Lumber company. More than 50 years ago he purchased the farm in Easton township and with the exception of six years has lived on that farm since. While a resident of Ionia city, he lived in the house, now the T. B. Preston residence, on Lafayette street. Sixty years ago November 15, he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Williams, a native of Otisco, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Williams, who were living on Washington street, across from the Evangelical church. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Newberry, of the Presbyterian church. Quietly Mr. and Mrs. Babcock observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary last November. Mrs. Babcock is seriously sick at their home. The widow and two children, Miss Lucy Babcock, who resides at home, and Mrs. A. B. Sibley, of Ionia, and a sister, Mrs. A. B. Morse, survive. Mr. Babcock also leaves a nephew, Judge Lucius Babcock, of El Reno, Olka. Funeral services will be conducted at the home Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery.
