H. Bacheler, the cancer specialist, and brother of Mrs. George H. Stephenson, of this village, died at his home in Grand Rapids, November 7, 1899, of catarrh of the stomach and bowels. The deceased was born in Providence, R.I., in 1840, coming with his parents to Michigan when only 14 months old. His childhood was passed on a farm in Livingston county where he lived until 1858 when he came to St. Johns and took up the study of medicine with Dr. Fasquelle. At the beginning of the civil war he enlisted with the 23rd Mich. Infantry as hospital steward, serving in this capacity only six months when he was promoted to assistant surgeon, which position he held until the close of the war. On his return home he entered the University of Michigan where he completed his medical education. He located at Hubbardston in 1866, where he married Marion B. Russell two years later. Three children were born to them, all of whom are now married. The Doctor practiced in Hubbardston 25 years, when he removed with his family to Grand Rapids where he founded and conducted a cancer hospital for the treatment and care of cancer patients exclusively. From the first his efforts and business were crowned with success, his business netting him a handsome sum. He carried on his profession in Grand Rapids nine years, and cared for his patients up to the time of his death, although his health had been rapidly failing for two years. He was made a member of St. Johns Masonic lodge in 1862, while home on a furlough. The Master and a subordinate officer of the Grand Rapids lodge accompanied the remains to Hubbardston and conducted the burial service. Dr. Bacheler was a very genial and affable gentleman, making a host of friends wherever he went. He was widely and favorably known throughout this community. Their home in Grand Rapids was one of the finest in that city. A widow; three daughters and one sister mourn their loss.
