Born in Orange township April 4, 1882, he was a son of the late William and Mary (Heilam) Backar and was married April 15, 1915 to Josie Hinds of Hillsdale. She died April 2, 1933. A retired farmer, Mr. Backar had made his residence at the present home for the past 33 years. He was a member of the LeValley Methodist church. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Leo (Barbara) Costello, three granddaughters, Mrs. Clark (Jo Ellen) Reeder, Patricia Costello and Carolin Costello, all of route two, Ionia; twin great granddaughters, Holly and Merry Reeder of route two, Ionia; one brother, Philip Baker of Marion and two sisters, Miss Louise Baker and Mrs. Laura Mix of Chicago. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the LeValley Methodist church with the Rev. J. Lawrence Ward officiating. Friends and relatives will be received at the residence until 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Balcom cemetery and arrangements are in care of the Stone-Kauffman funeral home. ------------ At the LeValley Methodist church, funeral services for Frank Backar, 75, were conducted by the Rev. J. Lawrence Ward, pastor. Mr. Backar died at his home in Orange township Monday and services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock. Arrangements were in care of the Stone-Kauffman funeral home. Burial was in Balcom cemetery. Bearers were Lynn Townsend, Robert Weisgerber, William Weisgerber, Arthur Rumbaugh, Erwin Heator and A.J. Chamberlain. Mrs. Frank Stout was organist. Attending from out of town were Miss Louise Baker and Mrs. Laura Mix of Chicago, Phillip Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Baker and Mrs. Lu Ette Sage of Marion, Evelyn Baker of Dearborn, Mr. and Mrs. William Baker and Mr. and Mrs. Ercie Pritchard of Evart, Mrs. Paul Wilhelme of Inkster, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Baker of Ferndale, Mr. and Mrs. George Becker, Mrs. Anna Reister, Mrs. Kate Laughlin, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Eckhardt and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Eckhardt of Lake Odessa and Miss Olive Henderson and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wade and sons of Lansing.
