Fred L. Backing, 87, of Belding, died Monday evening, July 21, 2014 at Metron 
of Belding nursing home.  Fred was born on March 19, 1927 in Manistee, the son 
of Fred A. and Evelyn (Lemmer) Backing.  Fred grew up in the Free Soil area and 
graduated from Free Soil High School with the Class of 1945.  He was a past 
member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. 

He is loved and survived by his wife Doris Ann (Dufon) Backing and their 
children; Mark Backing, Morris Backing both of Grand Rapids, Marwood (Cindy) 
Backing of Belding, Mary (Fred) Barr of Saranac, Kathy (Rick) Hysell of Lowell, 
George (Vickie) Backing of Middleville and Leonard Backing of Belding and many 
grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents 
and one sister Marlene. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, July 25, 2014 at Johnson-Feuerstein 
Funeral Home, Belding with Father Darrel Kempf presiding. Visitation will be 
one hour before the service. Interment will be in St. John Cantius Cemetery, 
Free Soil. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Joseph/St. Mary Catholic 
Church or St. John Cantius Church in Free Soil.
