Ionia Sentinel - Thursday, Sept. 20, 1900

E.P. Backus, a well known and respected resident of Berlin, died Thursday 
morning at 6 o'clock, of Typhoid fever. The funeral arrangements will be 
announced later. Mr. Backus was a member of the Oddfellows, the Maccabees and 
the Woodmen.

Resolutions of respect adopted by Wabasis tent, K.O.T.M., No. 144, on the death 
of E.P. Backus:
  Whereas, It has pleased the Supreme Ruler to remove from our midst our
  esteemed brother and friend, Sir Knight E.P. Backus, who died at his home
  in Berlin, Sept. 13, 1900. Therefore, be it
  Resolved,  That we, whose privilege it has been to associate with him, and 
  know him to have been a good and loyal citizen, a devoted husband and 
  father, true to the laws and principles of our beloved order, have lost a 
  valued friend and brother. 

  Resolved, That as a mark of respect to the memory of our deceased sir knight, 
  our charter be draped in mourning for a period of thirty days and that these
  resolutions be spread upon the minutes of this meeting. A copy be furnished 
  to each of the city papers for publication, and a copy be sent to the 
  bereaved family, to whom we extend our heartfelt sympathy in this, their 
  hour of sorrow and gloom, and may the promise of a bright future lighten
  their burden in the years to come.
