January 8, 1903 Rev. Benj. Warren Backus, an old and highly respected resident of East Berlin, died at Lake Odessa, at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Hattie Backus, on Sunday, January 4, 1903. He was born in Ontario, N.Y., October 11, 1818, being at the time of his death 81 years, two months and 24 days old. In early manhood he was united in marriage to Miss Rhoda Houseman, with whom he came to Michigan 50 years ago last spring, when the country was new. They experienced all the trials and difficulties incident to pioneer life. To them were born four children, three sons and a daughter, Sarah, Saul, Benjamin and Parker. Mrs. Backus died in September 1870. Mr. Backus afterward married Emily Alderman, who lived only about two or three years after their marriage. About twenty-five years ago he was united in wedlock to Mrs. Dolly Cain who survives him. Mr. Backus had been a member of the Wesleyan church for sixty years, and a minister in that body for fifty-five years. He has served the various charges throughout Michigan, being active in the work until laid aside with an accident sixteen years ago. Since that time he has not been himself. During most of the years of his active ministry he lived on his own homestead in East Berlin. Many of the older residents speak highly of the man and his work. The funeral services were held at the Wesleyan church in East Berlin, conducted by Rev. J. H. Wilcox, of Lake Odessa. He was laid to rest by the side of his first wife in the cemetery near Ionia.
