News was received by the Ionia friends this morning at 10:30, of the death of Ed. R. Bailey, who passed away a half hour before at Traverse City. While the sad news was not unexpected, it nevertheless came as a distinct shock to many. With the passing of this familiar and well-loved figure from our midst, there goes from among us a genial, jolly soul. He possessed the peculiar and rare qualities which enabled him to be a friend in the true sense of the word. He was kindly, he was genial, he was optimistic, he was generous. His humor was rich and inimitable, and yet with it all he carried within the recesses of his nature a vein of sympathy and heart comfort. Practically the entire business life of Mr. Bailey was spent in the hotel business. At an early age he became associated with his father and brother Herbert in the Bailey house here, and later selling out the lease of this place to his brother, he leased the Dexter house and conducted that for some time. Since leaving the Dexter, he took over the resort hotel at Topinabee, which under his management proved very profitable. During the winter seasons for several years Mr. Bailey acted as a supervisor of the dining car service of the Michigan Central railroad, and the last winter he was actively engaged in business, he conducted a large family hotel on Woodward avenue in Detroit. During the past two years his son John was connected with his father in the various enterprises. Mrs. Bailey and Mr. and Mrs. John Young were with Mr. Bailey at time of death, and will reach Ionia with the remains on Friday evening.
