Hoople Bailey, 85, of Muir, formerly of Ionia, died Jan. 8, at her home. Born March 12, 1907, in Palo, she was the eldest child of William and Maude Beach Hoople. She married Charles T. Bailey in 1927. They lived in Ionia until 1947 when they moved to Muir. He died in March 1963. She received a life teaching certificate from Central Michigan University in 1927, and was employed from 1933 to 1952 at Grand Valley Packing Co. She then returned to Central Michigan and received her bachelor's degree in 1961. She taught first in Muir Elementary School and then for 15 years at Emerson school in Ionia retiring in 1972. She was an active member of many local and state organizations, including Woman's Literary Club, Lucy Cull Hospital Guild, Lyons-Muir Historical Society, Lyons-Muir Library Association, Ionia County Historical Society, Michigan Retired Teachers Association, Ionia-Montcalm Retired Teachers Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers society. She was also a member of Ionia Business and Professional Women, and was honored as the group's Woman of the Year in 1973. She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Ionia, and associated with its CCW Class. Surviving are two daughters, Ms. L.J. (Marian) Archer of St. Joseph and Mrs. George (Doris) Kohler of Ionia; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Ivan (Lenore) Roberts, Pontiac, Mrs. Harold (Hazel) Clark, Saranac, Mrs. Joseph (Beulah) Hill, Ionia, and Mrs. Blaine (Valeta) Redemsky, Lakeland, Fla.; and a brother, William G. Hoople of Palo. Two sisters, Mrs. Leslie (Frances) Pierce and Mrs. Ace (Caroline) Jewell preceded her in death. Funeral and committal services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday from First Baptist Church of Ionia, with the Rev. James Bennett officiating. Pallbearers will be Edwin Baldwin, David Baldwin, Ron Purdun, Glen Barnes, Richard Wahl, and Kurt Lundquist. Burial will be in Balcom Cemetery in the spring. the family will be at Myers Memorial Chapel Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. At 6 p.m. Monday members of Delta Kappa Gamma will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home. Memorials have been established for First Baptist Church, Lyons-Muir Library Fund, Lyons-Muir Historical Society and the Blanchard House Museum Planning Committee, in care of the Meyers Memorial Chapel.
