Born June 3, 1896, in Mungo County, West Virginia, he was the son of Jay and Janie Smith Spaulding.He was later adopted by Benjamin Bailey, attended schools in Liberty, W.VA, and served in the U.S.Army during World War I. He was married to Minnie Byer on April 21, 1923, in Huntington,.W.VA., ad moved to Sunfield in 1946, later living in Portland and Ionia. He was a retied farmer and also retired Herdsman at Michigan State University. He was a Beale hound trainer and belonged to both the Wolverine Eagle Club and the Grand Valley Beagle Club; he was the oldest member of the Portland American Legion post; and attended Portland Church of the Nazarene. He was a lifelong gospel music singer. surviving in addition to Minnie, his wife of 64 years, are a son Mikey; a daughter Dorothy Pifer; a grandson; a brother, Henry Bailey, of East Bank, W.VA.; and five sisters, Toots Bridgeman and Della Christian, both of St.Petersburg, Fla.; Ethel Fortner of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Bessie Johnson of Holden, W.VA., and Linda Stepp of Kermit, W.VA; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. from the Mapes-Fisher Funeral Home, Sunfield, with the Rev. Thomas Voyles officiating. Burial will be in East Sebewa Cemetery.
