Death’s messenger came at 12:15 Tuesday a.m. The end was like unto her whole life, peaceful and in full accord with the Divine will. Rachel Klink Bailey, widow of the late L.H. Bailey, of this city, was born in New Lisbon, Ohio, March 4, 1823, descending from the sturdy Dutch stock of Pennsylvania. Her parents were among the pioneers of Ohio, moving into the western reserve about 1808. She was married in 1840, at Twinsburg, Ohio, and passed the early years of her married life in Hudson, a college town of that time, and Cleveland. In 1852 she came with her husband and family of five children, to Michigan, making the journey in a covered wagon of the kind then used. Settling in the then little village of Ionia, this noble wife and mother became identified with the best interests and citizen life of this community and commonwealth. Her patriotic instincts and interests came from the sterling men who helped make and defend our country—her father having fought in the war of 1812. And when in 1861 the 21st Michigan Infantry was encamped here, the good women of Ionia presented a beautiful flag made in the rooms of Mrs. Bailey, who cut the material and planned its stars and stripes, stitched it upon her sewing machine, assisted by her daughter, Mary Bailey Keeler and others. Mrs. Bailey possessed unusual energy of character, was frank and outspoken, was noted for her benevolence and kindness to the poor and needy around her. No call ever came to her for help and sympathy, when health permitted, to which she did not respond. She had an abundance of that charity that “thinketh no evil,” and was generous and ready to forgive any fault. All of life’s relations she filled with dignity and honor. As wife, mother and friend, she was kind, affectionate and true; with a Christian character as bright as her faith was steadfast and sublime; and loving the house of the Lord, was punctual in her worship when health permitted. Thus full of faith and good works, and full of hope of immortality, she has made safe entrance into the Paradise of God. Mrs. Bailey leaves one daughter, Mrs. Mary Bailey Keeler, of Saginaw, and three sons, Frank A. Bailey, of Port Huron, Herbert L. and Edward R. Bailey, of this city, and twelve grandchildren, also one brother, William Klink, of Adrian. The funeral was be attended from the Church of Christ, on Thursday afternoon at 2:30. Discourse by Rev. W. H. Scott. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/b/bailey8227nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 3.2 Kb
