He was the only son of James and Jeanette Baird who were pioneer residents of Keene. His father died when he was a small boy. While quite young his mother bought the farm on the north side of the Grand River about 2 miles west of Saranac. Here he helped in the clearing of the farm and building the home where he has spent the most of his life. March 3, 1876, he married Sarah Dodds, eldest daughter of Hugh and Margaret Dodds. To this union 7 children were born, 5 daughters and 2 sons, 1 little girl died many years ago and Mrs. Maud Williams died April of 1913. Eighteen years ago on 5-24-1904 death claimed the wife who had been so dear to him; and since that time his children have kept the home for him. For many years, it has been the privilege of the youngest son, Elvert, and his wife to care for their father in his declining years. Left to mourn are 3 daughters, Mrs. Mary Haskins of Boston Twp., Mrs. Blanche Thornton of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Ella Carey of McBain, 2 sons James and Elvert of Boston Twp., 15 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 nieces.
