Baker Jr., 79, of Ionia passed away Sun., June 17, 2001 at Heartland Health Care Center in Ionia. Mr. Baker was born Oct. 15, 1921 in Orange Township, the son of William C. and Edith F. (Hackett) Baker Sr. He attended Ionia High School and served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. Bill was married April 18, 1942 at the LeValley Parsonage to Marguerite Burger, and she survives. Mr. Baker worked for ExCello Corporation in Detroit for 30 years, retiring in 1971. Bill’s real love was farming, which he did before, during and after his time with ExCello. He eventually retired from farming in 1989. Mr. Baker was a member of the Sheridan V.F.W. Post #5065. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marguerite; two sons, Steven (Sue) Baker of Linden and Jeff (Kay) Baker of Morrice; two grandchildren, Bret (Paula) Baker and Aaron Dawson; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Jessica Baker; one sister, Shirley Simmons of Lakewood, Calif.; one aunt, Harriett (Elwin) Brown of Ionia; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service for Mr. William Baker Jr. will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday from Cook Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia with Rev. David Flagel of LeValley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Tuttle Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
