Balcom, who died at her home in Berlin township, on Wednesday, December 30, was one of the pioneer residents of Ionia county. She and her husband, Myron Balcom, who survives her, came to this state from Ontario county, New York, in the spring of 1849, immediately after marriage. They settled in Berlin township in that year, on the farm which is Mr. Balcom’s present residence, and they have lived there since. Mrs. Balcom saw the growth of the city, and when in a reminiscent mood of late years, has been able to tell interesting stories of the early days when the railroads, the telegraph, and the telephone were unknown or in their infancy. Besides her husband, Mrs. Balcom is survived by two children: Mrs. Flora Greenhoe of Berlin, and Frank M. Balcom of this city. The deceased has been in poor health for years, but bore up under her sufferings with true Christian resignation. Since the fall of 1849, Mr. and Mrs. Balcom have been members of the First Presbyterian church of Ionia, and the deceased lady was constant and earnest in her attendance. She was well known throughout the neighborhood in which she lived and was esteemed for her splendid character and true womanliness. She was a good wife and helpmate, a fond and loving mother, and noble Christian. Card of Thanks: We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many friends who assisted us during our sad bereavement. Also for the beautiful flowers and the music which touched our hearts.
