P. Baldwin of this village was stricken with a severe attack of paralysis, and it was then thought that she could survive but a short time; but her splendid vitality and will power sustained her until last Tuesday evening when she passed away about 7 o’clock, death having been the direct result of paralysis. Maria P. Friend was born in Brunswick, Medina county, Ohio, 55 years ago and she came to Sebewa with her father, the late John Friend in 1854, and resided in that town until 20 years ago when Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin came to Portland to live and they have resided here ever since. Beside the bereaved husband, deceased is survived by Mrs. A. B. Culver of Mexico, who had been called here by the dangerous illness of her mother, and had reached Chicago on her way home when intercepted by a telegram and she reached Portland the morning of her death; Mrs. Frank Pryer of Danby, and Lee of Portland. Mrs. Baldwin had accumulated quite a competence and was a sharp, shrewd business woman and looked after her business affairs up to the time she was afflicted. Funeral services were held from her late home on Friday forenoon last by Rev. Miller, and interment made in Portland cemetery, where one son was already buried. The attendance at the funeral was quite large. Mrs. Balderson was a social member of the Lady Maccabees but had no certificate of insurance in the order. The families of Geo. Friend and A. N. Evans attended the funeral of Mrs. Baldwin at Portland, she being a sister of Mrs. Friend and Mrs. Evans. Transcriber’s note: The deceased is Maria Baldwin, however in one instance in the obituary is referred to as Mrs. “Balderson.” This was transcribed exactly as written.
