Josiah Ball entered into rest at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. J. Ball in Berlin, Ionia county, Mich., on Saturday evening, October 4, at the ripe old age of 81 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was born in Quidhampton near Salisbury, England, 21st April, 1833, and was the youngest son of the late Josiah Ball of the Town Mills, Salisbury, England, and a member of the English branch of the George Washington Ball family. He came to American in April 1853 and followed newspaper editorial work in New York and later in Toronto, Stratford, Ottawa and Pembroke, Ontario, Canada, and also at Huntingdon, Province Quebec, Canada. Giving up this work he taught successfully in various schools of the province of Quebec for several years and finally entered the ministry of the Church of England in the diocese of Montreal, Canada. He was ordained a deacon in 1878 by the late Right Rev. Aston Oxendon, Bishop of Montreal and Metropolitan of Canada, and later to the order of Priest by the late Archbishop Bond of Montreal. After many years of active ministerial work in the diocese of Montreal, he took up missionary work on the Canadian Labrador in the diocese of Quebec, Canada, and also spent several years in the missionary field of the Magedalen Islands in the Gulf St. Lawrence, Prov. Quebec, Canada. During his ministry with the exception of his Labrador work, he was actively assisted by his daughter and after his retirement he spent his declining years with her. On the 30th of November 1857 he was married at Toronto, Ontario to Charlotte Chubb, youngest daughter of the late Richard Chubb of St. Helliere, Jersey, Channel Island and niece of the late Mrs. John Eliah of Youngs street, Toronto. She still survives him and bitterly mourns his loss. There were four children. The eldest son, Josiah R., died in 1901. He leaves two sons John N. Ball of Hapaneia, Ontario, and the Rev. T. W. Ball, M. A., curate in charge of the Church of the Ascension, Montreal, Quebec, and one daughter, Mary C., wife of his nephew, Wm. J. Ball, of Berlin, Ionia County, Michigan, and also two grandchildren, (illegible) Ball of Ottawa, Ont, and (illegible) J. Ball of Berlin, Ionia county, Mich. He was quietly laid to rest in Balcom cemetery on Monday afternoon, Oct. 6, 1913. The Rev. Cyrus Mendenhall kindly officiated. Another Publication: Monday, October 6, 1913 Josiah Ball, aged 81 years, died at the home of his son, John W. Ball on the Dr. Culp home in Berlin Saturday.
