March 18, 1991 IONIA- Esther J. (McKendry) Banhagel, 91, died Sunday at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center, Grand Rapids. Born Feb. 29, 1900, in Ionia, she was the daughter of Henry and Myrtle Millard Cook. She attended St. John's Episcopal Church, Ionia. She was also employed at one time at Ionia County Sheriff's department as a bookkeeper and later worked at the courthouse as a probation officer, in the Friend of the Court's office, as a county welfare agent and as a juvenile officer. She also had taught school in Belding, Forest Hills and Lake Odessa areas. Surviving are a son, John McKendry of Muskegon; two daughters, Jeanne Hawley of Lake Odessa and Joyce Moore of Orlando, Fla,; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; a brother, M.J. (Bill) Cook of Portland Ore. and a sister, Marion Robinson of Ionia. She was preceded in death by two husbands and two sons. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday from St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Scott Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Easton Cemetery. The family will be at Cook Funeral Home, Ionia, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. A memorial has been established for ICAN, (Ionia Council on Abuse and Neglect, in care of the funeral home.
