Dec. 22, 1930 CHURCH FILLED FOR BANHAGEL RITES MONDAY Hundreds throng SS Peter and Paul's for Requiem for Youth Fatally Injured in Hunting Tragedy. The church of SS Peter and Paul was filled Monday morning with hundreds of sorrowing relatives, friends and acquaintances who gathered fro the funeral services for Gerald Banhagel. 19 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Banhagel, fatally wounded last Wednesday in a hunting accident. Every seat in the edifice was filled with pupils and classmates of the Academy occupying a large portion of the middle aisle and the east transept, the balance being given over to the mourners and others. Solemn Requiem High Mass was offered by Rev. Fr. Joseph A. Maler, assisted by Rev. Fr. William J. O'Rourke, of Portland, as deacon and Rev. Fr. Patrick K. Brannon as sub-deacon, and Anthony Brakora acted as master of ceremonies. Acolytes were Harry and John Carten, Edgar Miller, Robert Beahan, John Long and Kenneth Antcliff. In silent testimony to the love and admiration borne for the youth, whose sudden death came just as he was reaching the more serious stage of life and as he began reaping the fruits and joy of exceptional success upon the athletic field, were floral offerings piled high upon the casket, and in separate baskets adorning the communion rail. Eight members of the Academy's 1930 football team bore the remains of their captain to the grave in the family lot in Mt. Olivet cemetery. They were Roland and Raymond Burrows, Fred Gierman, Charles Carten, Louis Vaydik, Kenneth Hadley, Charles Kelley, and Eugene Slowinski. The floral tributes were in charge of Misses Doris and Francis Kelley. Using the text. "He was taken away lest wickedness should alter his understanding, lest deceit should beguile his soul." Fr. Maier in his sermon stated that while Gerald's tragic death caused a pall of sadness to fall upon that community, there was a wide degree of comfort in the realization that his life had been such that he was amply prepared to meet his maker. Fr. Maier dwelt upon the youth's extensive popularity among the people of the city, young and old, and of the deep fellowship that surrounded him among hundreds of his schoolmates. Among those from out of town who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Keenan and two children; Genevieve and Charles of Jackson: Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wood of Port Huron; Mr. and Mrs. Theophile Banhagel and daughters, Mildred, Ruth and Helen of Lansing: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Banhagel and two children of Port Huron: Mrs. Scott and Fred Meade of Belding and William J. Rutley of Lansing. Additional Comments: Mt.
