Banhagel, 91, of Lake Odessa, formerly of Ionia, died Friday at Ionia County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Ionia May 27, 1895, the son of Edward and Tressia Banhagel He attended SS. Peter and Paul's Academy and was employed by Fred M. Kidd Sr. at the Ionia Sentinel-Standard. Subsequently he worked for the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News, and in 1949 began work at the Grand Rapids Press as a printer. He retired in 1959. He was a charter member of Ionia Lions Club and a life member and past exalted ruler of the Ionia Elks. Surviving are his wife Esther; a stepson, John McKendry of Muskegon; two stepdaughters Jeanne Hawley of Lake Odessa and Joyce Moore of Orlando, Fla.; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and one sister, Genevieve Begin of Howell. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bess, and his daughter, Betty. Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Tuesday from SS. Peter and Paul's Church, with a nephew, the Rev. Bill Begin, O.F.M., celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The rosary will be recited Monday at 7 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Bozung officiating.
