Banhagel, 50, died at her home, 148 East Lincoln Avenue, early Sunday morning of a glandular disorder after an illness of more than a year. She had been seriously ill for the past several weeks. Requiem Mass will be offered Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock at the church of SS. Peter and Paul in Ionia. Interment will be at the family lot at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Ionia. Mrs. Banhagel was the daughter of Frank and the late Lillian Leary, and she was born on a farm in Boston township July 30, 1890. She had spent a major portion of her life in Ionia County. She attended the Waterville district school; and later Saranac high school. For several years prior to her marriage in 1916 to George R. Banhagel, former Ionia newspaper correspondent, Mrs. Banhagel had served as chief operator of the Otsego and Saranac telephone exchanges. Surviving with the husband is her daughter, Elizabeth Ann; her father, Fran Leary, of Boston township; a brother, Leslie Leary of Lowell, and four sisters, Mrs. Flossie Vandenberg of Kalamazoo; Mrs. Ivah Davis and Mrs. Georgia Fox, of Detroit; and Mrs. Gladys Cahoon, of Saranac. Subsequent publication – Tuesday, December 17, 1940 Requiem Mass was offered Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock at SS. Peter and Paul church for Mrs. Elizabeth N. Banhagel, wife of George R. Banhagel, whose death occurred Sunday morning at her home, 148 East Lincoln avenue. Rev. Fr. John S. Fons officiated and interment was at Mt. Olivet cemetery. Robert Burns, Gerald Burns, Paul Gammage, Rex O’Connor and Louis Powell were the acolytes who assisted at the Mass. Bearers were Ben Banhagel, J. R. Magney, S. Bruce O’Connell, Harry H. Gemuend, and Clarence A. Koerber of Ionia, and Allan S. McCurdy of Grand Rapids. Floral arrangement was in charge of Mrs. Fern Banhagel, Mrs. Myrtie Boardman and Mrs. Mina Underwood, assisted by Martin Rivett and Max Koss. Among the many attending the services from Ionia were the members of the seventh and eight grades of SS. Peter and Paul academy, class and school mates of Miss Betty Ann Banhagel. Attending the services from away were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Davis, Mrs. George Fox and sons, Douglass and Donald, Mrs. Edward Banhagel, Mr. and Mrs. Ray E. Banhagel and daughter, Virginia, Mr. and Mrs. Louis P. Banhagel, Mrs. Genevieve Begin and Mrs. Dennis Menard of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Vandenberg, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie H. Vandenberg, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Vandenberg and Mrs. Donald Murphy of Kalamazoo; Mr. and Mrs. Allan A. McCurdy of Grand Rapids, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Palmer of Lansing.
