Bannister, 89, of Belding passed away Friday afternoon, November 15, 2013 at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. Don was born on November 30, 1923 in Belding, the son of Leo and Erma (Chatterdon) Bannister. He graduated from Belding High School with the Class of 1943 and later he proudly served his country during World War II in the US Army. Don had many stories of his war years. One big story was at the end of the war Don served as a guard and helped bring back to France all the gold that France had sent to the United States for safe keeping at the beginning of the war before the Germans invaded France. He was a life member of the Belding VFW Post No. 4406 and was a member of the Belding Bible Church. He worked as a Corrections Officer with the Michigan Department of Corrections- Riverside Prison, retiring in 1986. Don married Leah Devine on November 22, 1946 in Belding and she preceded him on February 21, 2008 along with their daughter Connie Grimm, and two sisters; Theola Jewell and Betty Lou Quillan. Don is loved and survived by his children; Richard and Diane Bannister of Stanton, Craig Bannister of Greenville, Mike and Angie Bannister, Kevin and Sandy Bannister and Bryan and Brenda Bannister all of Belding, 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Funeral and committal services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Belding Bible Church with Pastor Darwyn Hassert officiating. Private burial will take place in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Military honors will be offered by the Honor Guard of the Belding VFW. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Memorials may be given to Belding Bible Church.
