Barber, who has been in very poor health for several years, and whose condition has been critical for a few days, died at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Her general complaint has been asthma, but pneumonia set in recently, and complicated with heart trouble, hastened the end, which came with shocking suddenness at the last. Mr. and Mrs. Barber came to Ionia 34 years ago, from Hillsdale county. Mr. Barber assisted in laying the track of the Ionia & Lansing railroad into this city and was one of the first engineers on this little beginning of what is now the great Pere Marquette system, being the oldest resident engineer in the employ of the county. Mrs. Barber’s maiden name was Mary Hitchcock, and her age was 67 years. Besides her husband she leaves two children: Clifton, now residing at Ludington, and Pearl, wife or Arthur Acker of Riverside, Cal. She was a most estimable woman, of quiet and retiring disposition; not so widely known as some long-time residents, but respected and loved by those privileged with intimate relations. The funeral will be at family residence on High street, on Sunday afternoon. Her son, E. Clifton, and family and two brothers, Milton and John Hitchcock, all of Ludington, are expected to arrive this evening.
