Lake Odessa Scrapbook - April 1884

         SUICIDE OF LEWIS C. BARDEN

Lewis C. Barden, of Woodland Centre, was employed in the store of F. Hilbert & 
Son as clerk, and his work was satisfactory. He had a large circle of friends, 
and was in good financial circumstances. A genial companion and friend, he was 
at all times welcomed to any of the social circles in that vicinity. On Saturday 
last he complained of a dull head ache, but he attended the usual duties in he 
store.In the evening Douglas Cooper, the mail carrier, who also deals in eggs 
and other produce, went into the store to procure what eggs and other produce 
they had to dispose of to make up his load for Monday to bring to this market. 
He found Barden feeling blue, depressed and low spirited.He advised him to go to 
his room, which is over the store, and lay down awhile, and he, perhaps, would 
feel better. Barden complied with the idea and went to his room. In a few 
minutes a pistol shot was heard, and, on going to his room, he found alive but 
unconscious, with a bullet hole in his left temple. He lived several hours, but 
remained unconscious until death ensued. What the cause of the rash act was can 
only be conjectured By some  it is thought that disappointment in love had 
something to do with it; while others believe that he never rightly recovered 
from the effects of being thrown from a buggy, striking on his head upon the 
dray bed of Mrs. Maynard, a year ago. His funeral was largely attended on Monday 
by the I.O.O.F.,of which he was an honored member. He leaves an aged mother and 
brother to mourn.
