Feb. 12, 2012 Joseph William Barker, 35, of Kalamazoo and formerly of Portland, passed away on Feb. 9, 2012. He was born on Dec. 19, 1976 in Grand Rapids, the son of Donald and Betty (Wilson) Barker. Joseph enjoyed music, playing in his bands, and liked listening to older music, listening at an early age to Kenny Rogers and Johnny Cash. He was a truck driver, traveling through 46 of the 48 lower states. He also loved old Oldsmobile's, trap shooting, bowling and planting wild flowers. Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Ralph and Dorothy Barker, and Charles and Ruby Wilson; uncle, Gerald Wilson; and aunt, Rosemary Shinaver. Surviving are his parents, Donald and Betty Barker; sister, Jennifer (Ryan) VanSolkema; nephews, Ryder, Cody and Garrett VanSolkema; uncle, Charles Barker, Joe's birth mother, Ellen Gitchel, and half-siblings, Brent, Douglas, Molly and Steven; band members and friends of the bands, Lou S. Change and Killshot. The mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland, with the Rev. Larry King presiding. Rite of Committal will take place at a later date at East Sebewa Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lehman Funeral Homes, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. A Scriptural Wake Service and a time of remembrance will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
