Barkus, 78, Wagar road, Lyons route one, died late Wednesday afternoon at Ionia Manor following a short illness. He was born April 3, 1894 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of William and Katie Barkus. Following graduation from St. Joseph high school in Cincinnati he worked 20 years there for a laundry company. February 4, 1943 he was married in Detroit to Vivian Kenny and they came to Lyons in August of 1948. He was employed by A.C. Spark Plug Co. in Ionia and Muskegon and in 1959 retired from Mitchell- Bentley Mfg. Co. in Ionia. Surviving in addition to his wife, Vivian, is a step daughter, Mrs. Elkins Felck of Charleston, S.C. He was a member of Pewamo 21 club and assisted many Boy and Girl Scout groups in the area in fund raising. He also furnished a camp site on his farm many years for their use. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic church in Pewamo, Msgr. Thomas Bolger will officiate and burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Ionia. Parish rosary will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, and family rosary will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Shaw Rivett Hull funeral home in Muir.
