JOAN CAROL BARLEY
Joan Carol Barley, age 71, passed away December 10, 2016 in Lowell, MI. She was born
January 6, 1945 to A. C. and Betty (Gregg) Barley. Joan was  intelligent,
thoughtful, and curious with a wonderful sense of humor and vivid imagination. She was a
storyteller, a good listener and was a great friend to many. She was kind and funny; her 
friends remember her laugh. She loved to read, particularly poetry, and loved music,
especially country and opera. She enjoyed gardening and swimming in Lake Michigan but her
favorite place was on the golf course. Having played since she was a child, she was a near
scratch golfer. She loved the game and played every chance she got. She had a beautiful, 
effortless golf swing that mirrored her personality and outlook on life. Joan found
her calling later in life, earning a Master's in Social Work from GVSU after attending
Parsons College in Iowa. For many years she worked with families, and especially enjoyed
helping young children overcome trauma. Previously she owned two successful restaurants and
was an Investment Advisor at Merrill lynch, AG Edwards, and Old Kent Bank.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents, A. C. and Betty Barley; sister, Betsy
Barley; grandson, Wes Beasley. She is survived by a son, Richard "Chip" Beasley and his wife
Ashley of Chicago, IL; daughter, Kerry Beasley of New York, NY; sister, Gail B. and
her husband John M. Nowak of Grand Rapids, MI; sister, Mary Lou Martin of Beulah, MI;
brother Lawrence and his wife Mary Sue Barley of Portland, MI; grandson Beau Beasley of
Chicago, IL; and nieces and nephews, Laurie Hehl of St Johns, MI, Betsy Ramirez of Beulah,
MI, Christopher Nowak of Los Angeles, Sarah Nowak-Mulvihill and Ally McCall of Grand
Rapids, MI, Jessica Rushing of Ann Arbor, MI, Ann Kissane of Portland, MI, Tim Barley of Los
Angeles and former husband, Richard Reynolds Beasley of Roanoke, VA.

The memorial service will be celebrated by Fr. Larry King on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016
at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland, MI. Rite of Committal will follow at
Portland Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to  Lehman Funeral Homes. Online condolence may
