The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, February 24, 2001

Mrs. Josephine Barna, 88, of Easton Twp., Ionia, passed away Feb. 22, 2001 at 
the Ionia Co. Memorial Hospital.  She was born the daughter of Alan and Ada 
(Ray) Sherwood on April 16, 1912 in Orleans.  Jo graduated from Ionia High 
School.  She attended Western Schools for many years.  She loved to teach 
music, both piano and organ.

She married Stephen Barna on Sept. 5, 1970.  He preceded her in death on Aug. 
17, 1986.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ionia, a 
member of the Ionia Literary Club, and the Ionia Historical Society.

Surviving are one stepson, David (Vivian) Barna of Clarkston; one nephew, 
William Franch of Ionia; two cousins, Robert Sherwood of Grand Rapids and 
Henry Sherwood Jr. of Tennessee.  Jo was preceded in death by her first 
husband, Claude Schwartz, in 1969, and her second husband, Stephen Barna, in 
1986.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held Tuesday at 12 
noon from the Myers Memorial Chapel, 148 E. Main St., Ionia, with Dr. David 
Webber officiating.  Interment in the spring at Easton Cemetery.  Memorial 
contributions can be made to the Iona County Humane Society in care of the 
Myers Memorial Chapel, Ionia.
