The animal was the property of Henry Curtis, who employed Barnard. The Curtis family returned at five o’clock from Portland, where they attended the institute program, and found nothing to indicate a tragedy. At eleven o’clock, however, Mrs. Barnard became alarmed by her husband’s long absence. It was discovered that the bull was not in the barn and search was instituted. The mangled body was found in the field, but the bull would not allow it to be removed. At midnight the jail was called and Deputy Burger went out to assist. He, Dr. W.A. Grant and Bert Lindsey finally managed to draw the body through the fence and afterward tied the bull and got it fastened in the barn. The chain running from the animal’s nose to its knee was broken and there were many evidences of a violent struggle. Blood had been shed profusely on the ground and the body was crushed almost beyond recognition. The animal has been sold and will be removed Wednesday. It is the first serious trouble it has given. Mr. Barnard was about thirty years old and the father of three children. He was the son of Orange Barnard of Portland and well known in Lyons – a man of excellent character and much respected.
