Barnard, aged 72 years, 9 months and 14 days. The deceased was born in the state of Maine, April 20th, 1807. When a young man he removed to Troy, N.Y., where he took up the trade of a tinner. He afterwards studied medicine, and practiced several years in that place. Here he married and buried his first wife, who left him four children, three daughters and one son. The girls are all dead, and the son, John, who has grown up to manhood, now lives in California. A few years previous to his departure from Troy, he married his second wife, who survives him, and by whom he had two children, James and Albert, who live on the old homestead in Danby. In 1850 Dr. Barnard came to Michigan and purchased the farm of 320 acres, to which a few years later he brought his family, and for many years thereafter he devoted himself to his profession, and to the arduous task of improving his large farm. About eight years go he removed to this village, leaving his farm in charge of his two sons, and devoting his whole attention to his profession. As a result of his long residence here and extended practice he became widely known and was held in high esteem by all who formed his acquaintance. Possessed of a quiet but kind disposition, he ever had a word of cheer for all. Many years ago he identified himself with the M. E. church and remained a consistent member up to his death. His funeral took place Sunday forenoon under the direction o the Masonic fraternity, of which he was a member. He was also a prominent member of the Odd Fellows’ Lodge of this place, which also attended in a body. He was a charter member of Portland Grange, and was one of its most active workers. It was doubtless the largest attended funeral that has ever occurred in the place, the M. E. church being literally packed, and many who came were unable to get in. the funeral sermon by the pastor, Rev. A. P. Morrison, was a most able effort. Thus has passed form our midst a good man, who loss will be deeply felt and whose memory will be long cherished by this entire community.
