She was 71 the day before. Funeral services were held at the daughter’s home Sunday afternoon, Rev. John H. Stewart officiating. Burial was in Portland cemetery. Three years ago, while living with her son Herbert, at Grand Ledge, she suffered from gangrene in one of her feet and it became necessary to amputate the leg. She had fully recovered from the effects of this when other complications compelled her to take to her bed. The son, Herbert, died last June of lockjaw resulting from injuries when a window fell on him in the garage where he was employed, cutting his wrist. She has since made her home with the daughter above mentioned. Mrs. Barnes’ maiden name was Esch and her birthplace Westphalia. She married Napoleon Barnes, who died nine years ago. The children are Alton Barnes, Mrs. Marolf, Portland; William Barnes, Battle Creek. There are nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Michael Esch, Mrs. May Davis, Portland; Mrs. Albert Coumen, Christopher and Theodore Esch, of St. Johns, are brothers and sisters. Robert Esch, of Chicago, is a half brother. Mrs. Theodore Esch, sister-in-law of Mrs. Barnes, died at St. Johns Tuesday at the age of 79.
